L’intervista a RayZa: fautore di August 11th insieme a Dj Gruff

RayZa, l’Elemento liricista della coalizione voluta per August 11th, fa conoscere un po’ di sè rispondendo a qualche domanda che avevamo in serbo per lui. Check this out!

1.     How did the artistic connection between you and dj Gruff start? (Come nasce la connessione artistica tra te e Dj Gruff?)

I met DJ Gruff in New York on the Hush Hip Hop Tour. We connected on IG and I would post freestyle videos from time to time. He was showing love on a lot of the videos I was posting and one day he asked me if I would want to rap over one of his tracks with some scratching, he said it was his gift for a super monster. I suggested we do a whole album. The rest is history

“Ho conosciuto Dj Gruff a New York durante l’ Hush Hip Hop Tour. Ci siamo conessi su Instagram dove di tanto in tanto pubblicavo freestyle. Mi ha mostrato stima sotto numerosi video e un giorno mi ha chiesto se volessi rappare su una delle sue tracce con qualche scratch, mi ha detto che era il suo regalo per un “super monster”. Gli ho suggerito allora di creare un intero album. Il resto è storia.”

2.     Did you guys phisically work together? (Avete lavorato fisicamente insieme?)

Definitely. We did a lot of mixing,editing, and mastering together in different studios in the Bronx. We went to DITC (Digging.In.The.Crates) Studios a lot and also Plug In studios. Gruff recorded his verse for Foreign Exchange in the Bronx in my studio.

“Assolutamente si. Abbiamo fatto insieme una marea di mixing, editing e mastering in diversi studi nel Bronx. Siamo stati a lungo ai DITC (Digging.In.The.Crates) Studios e anche ai Plug In Studios. Gruff ha registrato i suoi versi per Foreign Exchange nel mio Studio nel Brox“

3.     August 11th means a lot to hip hop culture, is it a tribute to celebrate the beginning of this well spread movement? (L’11 Agosto è una data molto rappresentativa per la cultura hip hop, l’album è quindi un tributo per celebrare la nascita e la diffusione del movimento?)

Facts. Straight facts. Ain’t one lie in what you just said. It’s a long overdue celebration of the culture and its roots. The point is for anyone who doesn’t know that “August 11th” is hip-hop’s birth date to learn when,how, and why the culture came about that day. 

“Verità. Assoluta verità. Non c’è nulla da smentire in ciò che avete suggerito.E’ un’attesissima celebrazione della cultura e delle radici (hip hop). Il punto è che chiunque non sappia che l’11 Agosto è la data di nascita dell’hip hop, ora può conoscere il perchè, il come e il dove questo movimento è scaturito”

4.     You had a collab with a well known institution of italian hip hop culture. Can you find a relatable american dj/producer who shares similarities with dj Gruff? (Hai collaborato con un’istituzione del rap italiano, esiste un artista americano che puoi comparare a dj Gruff?)

Nope DJ Gruff is his own type of Monster. An Alien from an Army somewhere far away from this planet. 

“No, Dj Gruff è un “Monster” imparagonabile. Un alieno di un esercito lontano da questo pianeta.“

5.     It seems like this album is coming from the 90’s but it sounds actually super fresh, how will it be percevied by your public? (Questo disco suona anni 90 ma al contempo è un prodotto freschissimo, come verrà accolto secondo te dal pubblico?)

I make sure to put my soul into the music. I lead with what’s real to me and let their ears do the rest.

“Mi assicuro di mettere tutta la mia anima nella musica. Mi immergo in ciò che per me è il vero e lascio che le orecchie degli ascoltatori facciano il resto.“

6.     Your lyricism is full of references to historical personas, which kind of iconography do you wanna let us think about? (Il tuo liricismo fa spesso riferimenti a personaggi noti, su che iconografia si compone l’economia dei tuoi testi?)

When you see a mic I want you to think MC. When you see street art + spray paint cans I want you to think graffiti. When you see a turntable I want you to think DJ’s. When you see a b-boy or b-girl I want you to think breaking. The 4 elements is in the blood line of every person I referenced. It’s also in the bloodline of every real rapper to ever exists even if they don’t know it. When you see a Mic + a turntable I want you to think DJ Gruff & RayZa.

“Quando vedi il mic voglio che pensi all’MC. Quando vedi della street art e della bombolette voglio che pensi ai graffiti. Quando vedi un giradischi voglio che pensi a un Dj. Quando vedi un b-boy o una b-girl voglio che pensi al breaking. I 4 elementi sono presenti nel sangue di tutte le persone a cui ho fatto riferimento. Sono nel sangue di tutti i rapper veri che siano mai esistiti, anche se non ne sono coscienti. Quando vedi il mic e un giradischi voglio che pensi a Dj Gruff e RayZa.”

7.     Where do you find your artistic inspiration? (Dove trovi la tua ispirazione artistica?)

Life. Everything around me, the things I see,hear, and feel on a daily basis. My past, my future,my family,my friends,the legacy I’m going to leave behind. My downs,my ups, thunderstorms,rain,my visions, weed,shit I can go on all day about what inspires me creatively as a artist. It’s just Life. Without God there is no life so without him I’d be nothing.

“Vita. Tutto ciò che mi circonda, le cose che vedo e sento quotidianamente. Il mio passato, il mio futuro, la mia famiglia, i miei amici, l’eredità che lascerò. I miei alti e bassi, le tempeste, la pioggia, le mie visioni, le canne, tutto la merda che può ispirarmi creativamente come artista; è semplicemente la vita. Senza Dio non c’è vita e senza Lui sarei nulla.”

8.     Since you come from NY city ( where everything  started), what’s your opinion on Italian rap? (Dato che vieni da New York, la città dove tutto ha avuto inizio, dacci la tua opinione sul rap italiano.)

It’s dope! Most music I’ve heard has been through Gruff and I know he would only play real shit. I might not understand everything but I can feel the flames. I’ll understand more as I tour Italy and learn more words and how to speak the language.

“È fighissimo! La maggior parte della musica che ho ascoltato me l’ha suggerita Gruff e so che ascolta solo roba figa. Magari non capisco tutto ma posso sentirne le “fiamme”. Capirò di più una volta che farò il tour qui in Italia, quando imparerò la lingua e i vocaboli.”

9.     Where do you put August 11th in a era where trap basically is fagocitating the whole music industry? (In un’epoca nella quale il mercato musicale tende naturalmente alla trap come si colloca un prodotto hip hop come August 11th?)

In its own lane Right where it’s supposed to be. Next to every other album made in this world where it can stand on its own. Real music is forever and so is August 11th.

“Esattamente nella sua corsia, dove dovrebbe stare. Dinnanzi a qualunque altro album su questa terra dove sta benissimo così com’è. La vera musica è per sempre, così come August 11th.”

10.  Is there any possibility to enjoy this album live? If so, what about Italy? (Ci sarà la possibilità di ascoltare questo disco live, magari proprio in Italia?)
